Regular commemorative special-edition watches can be expected from Omega, as it’s the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. Each time, it offers watch designers a range of interesting elements to reference, from the hosting country’s culture or flag to individual sporting events. The brand has already released Tokyo 2020 Olympics special edition Speedmaster watches, and it’s now following up with Aqua Terra and Planet Ocean models, both featuring ceramic dials.
The new Seamaster Aqua Terra has a 41mm (150m water-resistant) case, and its blue ceramic dial is laser-etched with a motif referencing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics logo. (This marks the collection’s first time using a ceramic dial.) While the Aqua Terra pays tribute to this particular Olympic Games, the Seamaster Planet Ocean’s design references the national flag of Japan. In a 39.5mm steel case (600m water-resistant), its dial and bezel are a stark white broken only by a couple of red highlights. A lollipop-style seconds hand has a large red dot at its tip, and the bezel’s 20-minute marker is also in red using the brand’s “liquidmetal.”
The Aqua Terra is powered by the Omega 8900, whereas the Planet Ocean uses the 8800 movement, both automatic and visible through sapphire crystal display case backs with the Olympics and Tokyo 2020 emblems. Price for the Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020 will be $6,300, and the Seamaster Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 is $7,450. Both models are limited to 2,020 pieces each.
