Rado’s vintage-styled Captain Cook dive watch was something of a hit when it debuted in 2017 with 37mm and 45mm models. Now, Rado has announced a limited new 37mm version with a brown sun-brushed dial that’s based on the way vintage pieces’ dials in the brand’s archives have developed patina over the years.
The modern Captain Cook is remarkably faithful to the original from 1962, updated with modern materials, of course, and water-resistant to 100m. The raised “box-style” crystal that people love is done in scratch-proof sapphire, and the bezel insert is ceramic, Rado’s signature material. The rotating diver’s bezel is somewhat unusual in design in that it slopes inward,. toward the dial. The 37mm sizing is also refreshing for many who couldn’t get into the large watch trend that now seems to be finally subsiding after many years.
The Captain Cook is powered by a version of ETA’s automatic-winding, 80-hour power reserve movement, here called the C07.611. The whole package includes a brown leather strap, a Milanese mesh bracelet, and a green NATO strap, as well as a leather carrying pouch and strap-changing tool. The Rado Captain Cook 37mm for 2019 is limited to 1,962 pieces and has a price of $2,100.
