Part Iceman and all Maverick, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Edition Top Gun ($12,000) pays homage to the fearless pilots at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, who epitomize courage and skill. IWC has emblazoned the Top Gun emblem (and thankfully not Tom Cruise’s mug) on the back of the titanium and black ceramic 46mm case. This bonafide pilot’s watch is powered by the 79230-calibre automatic chrono movement and displays a dial with aircraft altimeter-style markings and hands. Moreover, it’s what’s called a “double chronograph” (more on chronographs) in that the two central stopwatch hands perform double duty (rattrapante) and can perform split-seconds functions, no small feat from a watchmaking point of view. This allows you to clock times in fractions of a second or measure intermediate splits within any given minute. Other fine horological details include 44-hour power reserve, day/date function, small hacking seconds, thick sapphire crystal with two-sided anti-reflective coating, and a soft-iron core for magnetic field protection. It ain’t cheap, so don’t go wearing this to play beach volleyball with your aviator sunglasses and your sweaty bare-chestedness.
