One of the biggest debuts at SIHH earlier this year was Vacheron Constantin’s new Fifty-Six collection. Based on an old reference from, you guessed it, 1956, the watch combined vintage looks with an affordable (for the brand) price point. Part of the reason for that lower price point was a focus on stainless steel and simpler movements, but now Vacheron is expanding on the Fifty-Six design with something decidedly more upscale.
Thus, we have the Fifty-Six Tourbillon. The new watch retains the ’50s styling of the collection but comes boasting an in-house, self-winding tourbillon movement and a case made out of 18-carat pink gold that’s 41mm in diameter and just under 11mm thick. The movement inside boasts a solid gold “peripheral” rotor, which surrounds the movement offering an unobstructed view of the movement and keeps the watch relatively slim. meanwhile, the tourbillon cage itself, according to the brand, takes about twelve hours to finish by hand. When the watch goes on sale early next year, it will do so at an eye-watering MSRP of $113,000, according to Hodinkee.
