In 1993, Grand Seiko debuted it’s Caliber 9F, arguably one of the greatest quartz movements ever made, retaining all of the technical goodies that make quartz movements accurate while adding high-end finishing akin to what you’d see on a mechanical movement. Its thermo-compensated, accurate to within seconds a year, and brand claims the watch can run for 50 years without needing a service (save for battery changes). To celebrate 25 years of that remarkable movement, Grand Seiko is debuting the 9F86, which adds a GMT complication to the mix.
Three new references will feature the new movement: the limited edition SBGN001 and the non-limited SBGN003G and SBGN005G. All three feature a 39mm case that’s just over 12mm thick and come with a 24-hour GMT bezel as well as a stainless steel bracelet. The limited edition, though, gets a special version of the movment adjusted to be accurate to within five seconds a year (the standard movement, meanwhile, is 10 seconds a year) and comes with a textured dial and bright yellow accents.
Only 800 of the limited reference will be made and is expected to go on sale in October for $3,500. The two mainstream models, meanwhile, will go on sale early next year, with a $3,200 MSRP.
