The G-Shock DW5600 is a stalwart, not just within the brand’s lineup, but amongst cheap watches in general. This affordable digital watch has been around since the late ’80s and is endearingly rugged and simple; G-Shock knows this, which is why the DW5600 has become a platform for special editions for the brand’s 35th anniversary. The latest is an interesting take on the watch in partnership with Barneys in Japan.
So what’s new? To match the watch’s black case, G-Shock removed most of the branding and text from the standard iteration’s dial and added black accents (like on the pushers), while the screen displays light letters over a black void, the inverse of the standard. More intriguingly, G-Shock ditched the rubber strap in favor of two deluxe leather options: a black goat leather strap or a black alligator strap, if you feel like paying a premium. They’ll retail for approximately $186 (20,520 yen) and $352 (38,880 yen), respectively. Both watches will also come with an additional black NATO.
As you’d probably expect, these are both Japan exclusives and limited edition — in short, they’re very hard to get. In fact, the initial run of watches already sold out, but a second bath will become available for pre-order August 22nd at noon, Japan time (or midnight, EST). So, you can still get your hands on one if you have a friend in Japan or if you try using a proxy shopping service.
