Alpina’s penchant for building reasonably priced, Swiss-made tool watches has always shown through in its mechanical timepieces, but for would-be watch buyers who don’t care about mechanical watchmaking (or would prefer something cheaper), the brand’s low-cost, battery-powered offerings have always been tempting, too. Adding to its stable of sub-$1,000 quartz timepieces, the brand has just introduced a trio of simple, rugged-looking GMT watches.
The Startimer Pilot GMT comes with a stainless steel 42mm case and has three distinct colorways to choose from: a full black dial, a gray-and-beige bezel and a gray-and-red bezel (with a PVD black case). The latter two are an interesting choice — they almost give the appearance of a faded vintage watch. Each comes affixed to a nylon strap and is water resistant to 100 meters. Given that entering into the mechanical GMT club generally starts over $1,000, the Startimer Pilot GMT’s sub-$600 starting price makes it a great budget choice for travelers.
