This Avant-Garde Timepiece Is the Result of an Unlikely Collaboration Between Watchmakers

Plus, it’s made for a good cause.

Recently, 49 watchmakers revealed their one-off creations for the “Only Watch” auction benefiting research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Well, except for one: a collaboration between indie watchmakers Urwerk and Laurent Ferrier, which was only indicated by a concept sketch. It’s an interesting pairing, for sure; both Urwerk and Laurent Ferrier are two highly-respected indie watchmakers, though they approach the art with two completely different ethe. Urwerk makes some pretty bold avant-garde pieces, while Lauren Ferrier’s approaches watchmaking with a far more classic mindset. Still, the end result of their team effort has been revealed, and it’s pretty incredible.

The watch is called the Arpal One, and it gets its name from the alloy that makes up its case: Arpal+, which is made up of 75 percent precious metals and 25 percent “other materials.” Inside, the watch is powered by a self-winding movement that displays the time via a series of rotating “satellite disks,” which denote the hours; as they rotate, they align with a scale at the bottom of the display denoting minutes. The watch is slated to go up for auction along with the 48 other Only Watch lots on November 11 and is estimated to fetch between $52,000 and $72,000 when it does.
