TAG Heuer’s New Carrera Celebrates a Special Chronograph From 1965

The new special edition TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph honors the Carrera “Dato 45.”

If you’re a serious fan of the Heuer Carrera, you may be familiar with one of the more niche models, the Dato 45. Released in 1965, this particular Carrera was available in several iterations and featured a 45-minute counter (either alone or accompanied by a running seconds counter), plus a date wheel at either 9 o’clock or 12 o’clock. Placing a date wheel in a chronograph was unusual in the mid-60s and they didn’t sell particularly well upon launch. Given their usual configuration, these Carreras are instantly recognizable and highly collectible.

In celebration of their 160th anniversary, TAG Heuer has released a modern tribute to this model, a special edition Carrera Sport Chronograph available with either a blue or white dial. Based upon the Carrera Sport Chronograph released earlier in the year, the new chronos are once again powered by the brand’s Heuer 02 movement, an automatic caliber with a power reserve of 80 hours. Limited to 1,860 pieces each (Heuer was founded in 1860), the new watches are 44mm in diameter and feature ceramics bezels with tachymeter scales, red date wheels (a reference to the Dato 45 ref. 3147N), circular brushed dials, rhodium-plated indices and hands and Super-LumiNova lume.

100m of water resistance, a sapphire crystal, a screw-down case back and an H-shaped bracelet with folding safety clasp round out the feature set, while each watch ships in a special anniversary box. The new Carrera Sport Chronographs are available now for $5,950.
