The luxury sport watch is an established category with healthy variety but also plenty of recognizable traits and patterns — and these often bold watches lend themselves to big sizing and sporty complications as brands’ collections expand. From the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore to the Vacheron Constantin Overseas, the chronograph has been a used in many such luxury sport watches, and Chopard’s own Alpine Eagle now follows in that tradition.
Chopard introduced the Alpine Eagle in 2019 based on its St. Moritz watch from the 1980s. Now, the XL Chrono grows the collection and the case size, adding both thickness and girth as well as a flyback chronograph movement. At 44mm wide and 13.15mm thick, the XL name is justified, and its sport watch qualifications are backed up with a water resistance of 100m. At launch, the XL Chrono comes in three variants: two steel models with either blue or gray dials as well as a two-tone model with a grey dial incorporating the brand’s ethically sourced gold.
The brand’s own 03.05-C movement features an automatic chronograph with a flyback function and 60 hours of power reserve. Like the movement, the case itself is complicated, well constructed, nicely finished and packed with details. (The same could be said for the bracelet.) In all steel, the Chopard Alpine Eagle XL Chrono has a price of $19,200, or $26,800 in two-tone gold and steel.
