A year ago, TAG Heuer announced it would be bringing back one of its most iconic watches: the Autavia, a chronograph popular in the racing scene in the ’60s and ’70s. The company asked its fans to choose from one of 16 references of the watch in a tournament-style competition. A year later, we finally have the finished product.
Based on the reference 2446, famously worn by F1 driver Jochen Rindt, the new Autavia doesn’t stray much from the original. It has a “reverse-panda” dial design and a rotating 12-hour bezel. The watch has ballooned in size from 39mm to 41mm, which is a potential point of contention. It’s also much thicker, presumably to accommodate a new movement: the Heuer 02 self-winding chronograph with a solid 80-hour power reserve.
According to TAG Heuer’s website, it’s “available in March” — so, soon, presumably — and will come on either a leather strap or steel bracelet. Prices should start at around $4,965.
