The watch industry is awash with too much news to cover. Each week, we’ll break down everything worth knowing. This week: IWC’s first “blue movement,” Baume & Mercier’s newly released unique GMT, the most funded watch on Kickstarter and more.

IWC Is Feeling Blue

IWC’s latest “Le Petit Prince” watch features an annual calendar movement with a rotor in the shape of the titular Prince standing atop a tiny planet. The watch will be available in either red or white gold, both in 46mm cases and in a limited run of 250 each. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the watch, though, is the white gold version’s movement, which is finished in blue — a first for IWC.

A Unique Take on the GMT

Baume & Mercier’s latest addition to the Clifton line features a unique GMT indicator. It’s located in a half-circle sub-dial with two arcs at 12 o’clock and features a double-sided hand — the white hand and arc indicate hours 6 through 18 and the red hands and arc indicate hours 18 through 6. The watch also features a power reserve indicator and a 43mm case, and is priced at $3,690.

With nearly $4 million in backing, Kickstater watch brand Filippo Loreti says its latest venture the most funded timepiece in the history of the crowdfunding platform. The brand’s new collection of timepieces includes both mechanical and quartz movements from Miyota and Hattori (a part of Seiko), with prices ranging from approximately $160 to $400.

Vulcain’s Uncertain Future

Reports out of Switzerland state that indie Swiss watchmaker Vulcain, best known for its mechanical alarm watches gifted to American presidents, has laid off seven of its 12 staff positions amid industry turmoil. It’s possible Vulcain will be sold in the future, and despite its economic situation the brand still plans to gift a watch to the president-elect, a tradition carried out since President Harry S. Truman.

Vulcain first produced its alarm wristwatch, the Cricket, since the 1940s; the timepiece helped popularize the complication. This vintage Cricket encases that alarm in an 18k gold case, and has a lovely patina.
