Since it opened up shop following the unification of Germany in 1990, A. Lange & Söhne has quickly become one of the most highly regarded names in watchmaking, for both their watches’ innovative and complex movements and their quality. For many, an A. Lange & Söhne is a bucket-list watch. But with watches starting at over $20,000, buying one is a difficult proposition. Now, with the unveiling of a new dress watch, the Saxonia Thin 37mm, owning one just became a little more attainable.
The Saxonia Thin 37mm is nothing radically new. It’s based on the original Saxonia Thin, a large (for a dress watch) 40mm timepiece with a hand-wound movement. At $24,500, the original watch was one of the entry points to the A. Lange & Söhne brand. But by taking 3mm off the case size, the A. Lange & Söhne has lowered the price by nearly 10 G’s. Aside from the change in size, the company has not detailed how this was done — in other words, it could very likely be that it is a business move to reach new buyers with smaller budgets.
The 37mm Saxonia gets the same 2.9mm-thick L093.1 movement found in the larger Saxonia, complete with a 72 hour power reserve, German Silver bridges, hand-finishing of all the components and gold chatons. The movement sits in a thin 5.9mm case, available in both rose and white gold. So start saving.
