Between the double-digit crew here at Gear Patrol, there are tens of thousands of dollars worth of time pieces between us. Yet, lately I find myself appreciating well-priced goods and gear out there. You know… the stuff that’s measured in dollars, not paychecks.
Of course, that could be due to the sub 8000 Dow Jones and my incindering 401k or the fact that the word luxury has almost become a taboo thing to say. I can’t say I disagree.
The re-rise of Hamilton Watches is something I’ve been watching closely, especially after the venerable American brand’s procurement by Swiss manufacturer Swatch. It’s been a good couple of years for Hamilton. They’ve implemented Swiss C.O.S.C. movements across the line, and embraced the fact that classic American design is just that, classic. Appropriate for Mad Men? Yes.
Looking for a semi-dressy timepiece, I recently procured a Hamilton Jazzmaster Power Reserve. The automatic dress watch has silver-toned luminous hands and numbers, date, and a power reserve subdial – something you simply don’t find in watches at this price range. The face and exposition back are both protected by sapphire crystal and its black crocodile strap and stainless steel deployment buckle excude luxury. Restrained luxury.
