Traveling with charging cables can be a mess. We’ve all been there. You get to the airport only to realize your smartphone or laptop’s battery is low. Then you dig in your bag for the charging cable, and by the time you’re done, you basically have to repack your bag again. Shambles.

Of course, there are plenty of cable management accessories you can buy to help neatly pack your charging cables, such as bags, straps, cord tacos and cable winders (like this). Some charging cables have their own built-in management solutions, too.

Native Union’s newest charging cable, the Pocket Cable, has its own built-in cable management solution — and it does it in a pretty slick way.

Native Union Pocket Cable

The Native Union Pocket Cable is a portable USB-C to USB-C charging cable disguised as an EDC. It’s designed to look and work similar a pocket knife — its body has a built-in cable management solution so that the cables fold compactly back into itself when not in use. It’s also roughly the size of a pocket knife.

The outside of the body is made of Kevlar, and the cable has PET-reinforced braiding — according to Native Union, the Pocket Cable has a lifespan of 30,000 bends (basically, it should last a long time). There’s a tiny keyring, too, so you can easily attach it to an existing keychain.

The Pocket Cable is convenient but short. The USB-C to USB-C cable is only 6.5-inches long.

As for the actual USB-C to USB-C charging cable, it supports up to 60 watts of power and, therefore, is fully capable of charging your smartphone, tablet, or laptop (provided you have the right adapter, of course). It also supports up to 480 MB of data transfer speeds.

The only real downside is that the charging cable is quite short. It only stretches roughly 6.5 inches and thus is probably best used to connect a smartphone to a laptop or a portable power bank. If you want to charge a laptop from a wall adapter, you’ll have to find an outlet in a pretty convenient location.

Price and Availability

At $30, the Native Union Pocket Cable is fairly expensive for what it is. But you’re paying a premium for the innovative form factor, rugged design and built-in cable management solution.

For context, Apple—a company known for selling its own charging accessories at fairly steep prices—offers a 60-watt braided USB-C to USB-C that’s 40 inches long for $19 (here).

The Pocket Cable is available now. You can buy it from either Native Union or Amazon. It comes in five colors: black, yellow, orange, green (teal) or stone (off-white).
