Will Your Old iPhone Case Fit on the New iPhone 16? We Found Out

The answer is more straightforward than ever.

It’s that time of year when those upgrading to a new iPhone wonder if they can save a few bucks and stick their old case on a new phone. In recent years, it’s been unlikely.

Last year was a prime example. Apple introduced a new button, the Action Button, to its higher-end phones, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. This meant that even if your older case had fit (which it really didn’t), you absolutely shouldn’t have used it.

If you had a non-Pro iPhone and were upgrading to an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus, the question about using an older case was less obvious. But Apple gave its iPhone 15s contour edges and redesigned corners, so while an older case still technically fit, it didn’t fit well.

With this year’s iPhone 16 lineup, the answer is more blatant than ever. That’s because Apple gave all four iPhones 16 — not just its Pros— another new button: the Camera Control button. It also gave the non-Pros the Action Button that was exclusive to last year’s Pros.

This means that no matter what older case you have, you shouldn’t use it on an iPhone 16 — no matter the model — because it’s going fit over or be compatible with the new buttons.

Still, we’re here to do the hard yards. If you’re in a pinch and don’t want to upgrade to a new case, or maybe you really love the feel or patina of your older case, we’ve tested how each older case fits on its iPhone 16 successor.

Will an iPhone 15 case fit an iPhone 16?

The iPhone 16’s vertically orientated camera module is one reason why an old case doesn’t fit.

No, not at all.

Even though the old and new iPhones are the same size, the older case doesn’t work with iPhone 16’s completely redesigned camera module. It’s longer and slimmer (and very different because of its vertical orientation), and an older case covers up the iPhone 16’s bottom lens.

Also, the older case doesn’t accommodate the iPhone 16’s new Action and Camera Control buttons. So even if you have an older case that somehow works with the iPhone 16’s camera module, it will still block you from using (effectively) its two new buttons.

Will an iPhone 15 Plus case fit an iPhone 16 Plus?

The iPhone 16 Plus has new buttons and a redesigned camera module. Thus, an older case is a no-go.

No, not at all.

It’s the same explanation as its smaller sibling. The older case won’t fit the iPhone 16 Plus’s new vertically oriented camera model. So even though these two phones are the same size, an older case simply doesn’t fit it. And if you were to squeeze it on somehow, it would block the bottom camera.

Also, the older case doesn’t accommodate the iPhone 16 Plus’s new Action and Camera Control buttons.

Will an iPhone 15 Pro case fit an iPhone 16 Pro?

The iPhone 16 Pro is too tall for last year’s iPhone 15 Pro cases.

No, not at all.

The older case doesn’t fit the iPhone 16 Pro because it’s too small. The iPhone 16 Pro (5.89 inches) is taller than the iPhone 15 Pro (5.77 inches) and thus the older case simply doesn’t fit.

Obviously, the older case doesn’t accommodate the iPhone 16 Pro’s Camera Control button, but that doesn’t matter because the older case doesn’t even remotely fit.

Will an iPhone 15 Pro Max case fit an iPhone 16 Pro Max?

No, not at all.

Just like its smaller Pro sibling, the difference is size. The iPhone 16 Pro Max (6.42 inches) is a substantially taller smartphone than the iPhone 15 Pro Max (6.29 inches) and thus the older case simply doesn’t fit.

There’s also no cutout for the Camera Control button, but again, it’s a non-factor since the case doesn’t even fit.
