When shopping for a new TV, you want to get the best model (that fits your space) at the best possible price. That’s obvious.

And while this requires you to know a thing or two about TVs (or to just ask an expert), one thing you don’t need to predict is the best time to get a great deal on a TV — that’s a given each year.

You see, TVs have an annual release cycle — new models come out at the same time every year. And once the new TVs get announced, the previous year’s model drop in price. Retailers want out with the old and in with the new.

And that’s when you want to strike.

When’s the best time to buy a TV?

The vast majority of new TVs get announced at the start of the year — at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early January — and have a “spring” release date. From this time on, you can find pretty good deals on the previous year’s TVs. However, a few times of the year are especially good.

January and February are both great times to buy a TV. The newest TVs have been announced but aren’t yet available, and retailers are looking to sell out of the previous year’s models.

The Super Bowl falls during this period — typically in the second week of February (this year, it’s Sunday, February 9th) — and retailers tend to deeply discount last year’s TVs ahead of the big game.

The other great time to buy a TV is during the holiday push at the end of the year. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is usually the first time that most of that year’s TVs get big discounts. It’s done in anticipation of the new year and the imminent announcement of the next-gen models.

Are last year’s TVs worth buying?

Yes, they absolutely are.

The truth is that newer TVs are better than the previous year’s models — but not typically by that much. They’re integrated with new technologies that usually allow them to deliver a brighter and more vibrant picture with more contrast, but the upgrades tend to be things the average person wouldn’t notice (or would have to try to notice). Aside from the price and hassle, this is a big reason why most people don’t buy new TVs yearly (or every few years).

Throw in the fact that you can get a year-old TV for many hundreds of dollars less — and it’s really a no-brainer.

The Best TVs to Shop Before the Super Bowl

Below we’ve rounded up some of the best reviewed TVs of the past year, all of which are already discounted since the 2025 models have been announced.

All the TVs below are available in a variety of sizes. We’ve listed the prices of each 65-inch model, as that’s pretty much the median size for TVs these days.

LG is the biggest name in OLED TVs — in fact, it manufactures many of the OLED panels featured in other TV brands (including Sony, Hisense, and Panasonic) — and the C4 is its most popular OLED TV. It strikes an outstanding balance between price and picture quality, offering 90% of the performance the best TVs for about 70% of the price. Its four HDMI 2.1 inputs all support the latest console standards and can handle 4k @144Hz.

Samsung S90D QD-OLED (2024)

Samsung’s flagship QD-OLED TV from 2024 features the company’s Quantum Dot technology, which makes their colors “pop” a little more than traditional OLED TVs while adding more brightness. Many experts have called this the best OLED TV for the money, given its excellent picture quality and optimized support for the most demanding gaming consoles across all four HDMI ports. Note, though, that the biggest 83-inch version of this TV is just an OLED display vs. QD-OLED. Like all Samsung TVs, it also lacks support for Dolby Vision,
