After a number of years, Sennheiser has officially announced new flagship noise-canceling headphones. The new Momentum Wireless headphones look very similar to the Sennheiser HD1 Wireless (also called the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Wireless) headphones, but they offer a number of new features to make sure they’re hip with the times. The new Sennheiser Momentum Wireless headphones cost $400 and are available in black now. If you want the white model, Sennheiser expects them to ship in November.
As far as what’s new, there’s a lot. The new Momentum Wireless headphones are much more customizable when it comes to noise-cancellation. There are three different noise-canceling settings you can toggle through, and there’s a new transparency mode so you can better hear the sounds around you. You can even adjust the EQ settings via the Momentum app. Also new, the headphones are now integrated with optical sensors so that they’ll automatically turn on and play music when you put them on your head, and pause the music when you take them off. Interesting, there’s no power button on the new Momentum Wireless headphones, so in order to turn them off you’ll have fold them up.
The new Sennheiser’s now charge via USB-C, are built with Bluetooth 5.0, support voice assistants (Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri), and are integrated with Tile support, so you can find the headphones through the Tile app if you misplace them. One of the best things in my opinion that Sennheiser did not change: volume controls; instead of the swipe gestures that many headphones have adopted, such as the Bose Headphones 700 and the Sony WH-1000XM3, the new Momentum Wireless still have a familiar three button system.
Sennheiser’s thing with headphones has always been premium sound and premium design, but they also came at premium price. The new Momentum Wireless headphones, for instance, cost the same as Bose’s newest noise-canceling headphones, the Headphones 700, which have a completely unique mode for taking and receiving calls. We have yet to test the Momentum Wireless headphones yet, but it’s interesting to see how they stack up to competition.
