Bose just announced a new portable speaker for the home, conveniently named the Bose Portable Home Speaker ($349), and it looks similar to company’s other portable Bluetooth speakers, the SoundLink Revolve ($199) and SoundLink Revolve+ ($299). The difference is that this new speaker has built-in Wi-fi and Bluetooth, meaning you can use it as a wireless multi-room speaker (as long as you link it up with other Bose smart speakers and soundbars) or a portable Bluetooth speaker, in case you want to take it outside. When at home and connected to Wi-Fi, it can be used as smart speaker; you can talk to either Google Assistant or Alexa and control the music with your voice. The speaker speaker supports AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, too, so you can stream music to it in numerous ways.
The Bose Portable Home Speaker isn’t yet available. You’ll be able to buy the speaker, in either black or silver, on September 19.
As far as specs, the Portable Home Speaker is a 360-degree speaker that 7.5-inches tall and weighs 2.3 pounds. Bose claims it’s able to deliver “deeper bass than any other portable smart speaker its size.” It charges via USB-C and has a 12-hour battery life; you can buy a “charging cradle” for an extra $29, if you want more of a home dock for the speaker. Additionally, it has an IPX4-rating, meaning it’s essentially splash-proof.
It’s worth mentioning that Sonos is expected to release its first portable speaker within the next few weeks, rumored to be named the “Sonos Move,” and it essentially should have the same capabilities as the Bose Portable Home Speaker, only it’ll be able to play with other Sonos speakers in a multi-room sound system, as opposed to other Bose speakers.
