Based in New York City, D’Angelico instruments are revered by guitarist across the world. In 1932, John D’Angelico opened up a guitar shop in New York City’s Little Italy neighborhood where he built and sold handmade archtop jazz guitars. The foundation of his design principles came from his experience as an apprentice to a violin builder, and at the height of his output in the late 1930s, D’Angelico was making around 35 instruments a year (with the help of a few workers). In 1952, he hired James D’Aquisto as an apprentice and worked with him for 12 years, until D’Anglico’s sudden death in 1964. And though the company has gone through many changes in the past half century, its instruments still reflect the designs of the founder.
