Your Apple Watch Just Gained a Neat New Ability

You likely use Apple devices and Google services. For example, you probably have an iPhone and Mac, but use Gmail for email, Chrome for a web browser and Google Maps for navigation. It’s just what you know.

For Apple Watch wearers, Google doesn’t have many apps and services that work natively on it. The two standouts have been Google Maps and YouTube Music. But, surprisingly, Google has added another one this week.

For the first time, Google Calendar has a dedicated Apple Watch app.

The Google Calendar app on your Apple Watch looks and works similarly to its iPhone app — but it’s been simplified.

Instead of showing you a month’s worth of calendar events, the Google Calendar on your Apple Watch is limited to a week. Each event is a different color to make them easier to distinguish.

When viewing an event, it shows it’s time and the Google Tasks assigned to it. The day and date of the event are displayed in the top-right corner of the screen. You can tap into each event to see more details, such as its exact location.

If there’s additional information to be seen, the Apple Watch app will prompt you to open the Google Calendar app on your iPhone to see more.

Additionally, the Google Calendar app supports two different Apple Watch complications. The “What’s next” complication displays your next appointment, while the “Today’s date” complication simply shows the day and date, providing quick access to opening your Google Calendar.

How to download

The Google Calendar app for the Apple Watch is available now, but you’ll have to download it — it won’t automatically appear on your Apple Watch even if you have the Google Calendar app on your iPhone.

You can download the app directly from your Apple Watch by opening the App Store app and searching for “Google Calendar” (in my experience, this is the easier method). Alternatively, you can download the app through the Watch app on your iPhone.
