If you subscribe to either Spotify or Apple Music — which you probably do, given they’re by far and away the two most popular music streaming services — then Apple just quietly rolled out a sneaky cool feature to your iPhone.

It involves Shazam.

A Shazam upgrade

As a little background, Apple purchased the music recognition app back in 2018. Then, after iOS 14.2 was released in 2020, iPhone owners could quickly access Shazam from the Control Center.

As of last week, Apple has updated its Shazam app so that anytime you use its music recognition feature from your iPhone’s Control Center, those songs will automatically sync to the “My Shazam Tracks” playlist in your Spotify or Apple Music.

This feature had been previously available, but you needed to use the music recognition feature from within the Shazam app … which you probably didn’t because it’s way quicker to use Shazam from your iPhone’s Control Center.

Also, even though Shazam is now baked into iOS, the actual app isn’t pre-downloaded on your iPhone, so there’s a good chance you haven’t been able to sync your Shazam’d songs with your music service.

But now you can.

How to turn it on

The catch is that you’ll have to turn this music syncing feature on … and in order to do that, you’ll have to download the Shazam app (if you already don’t) on your iPhone.

Once you download, you need to open the Shazam app and follow the on-screen prompts. When you reach its home screen, swipe up and select the Settings wheel in the top-left corner.

From here, you can choose whether you want the songs to sync with Apple Music or Spotify. Once toggled on, your Shazam’d tracks will automatically get added to the My Shazam Tracks playlist.

Once toggled on, all your previous and future Shazam’d tracks will sync to that playlist. It won’t matter if you use the Shazam app or access it via the Control Center or Siri — they will sync to Spotify or Apple Music all the same.
