The next big software update for the iPhone is iOS 18.4, which Apple recently rolled out the first developer beta of, giving us a glimpse of its new features — and there are quite a few.

iOS 18.4 promises to add Priority Notifications, an Apple Intelligence feature that analyzes the importance of specific notifications and then displays them in a new section of your iPhone’s Lock Screen.

The software update will also deliver updates to Apple News and Image Playground. For those who own a Vision Pro, a new app will make it easier for guests to use the headset.

Additionally, it looks like the software update bring a sneaky cool feature for international travelers.

A new default app

When Apple rolled out iOS 18.2 this past December, it gave iPhone users the ability to change the default apps for things like calling and messaging for the first time. So, if you don’t want your iPhone’s Phone or Messages apps for calls and texts, you can use third-party apps instead.

With iOS 18.4, Apple is going to give you the option to change another default app on your iPhone — but this time, it’s the translation app. That’s right, if you don’t want to use Apple’s Translate app, you’ll be able to switch a third-party option like Google Translate or Microsoft Translator.

To make the change, you’ll have to access the Default Apps menu — which Apple just introduced with iOS 18.2 — in the Settings app.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and select Apps.
  3. Select Default Apps at the top.
