This May Be the Best Affordable Smart Lock Out There

Wyze already makes some of our favorite (and by far the cheapest) smart cameras, smart bulbs and smart security systems.

Wyze continues to be a big player in the smart home market. The company, who already makes some of our favorite (and by far the cheapest) smart cameras, smart bulbs and smart security systems, has just announced its first-ever smart lock. The all-new Wyze Lock costs $90 — which is significantly cheaper than most other smart locks by Nest, August and Schlage — and early-access buyers can purchase it right now. The Wyze Lock will go on sale everywhere this coming February.

The Wyze Lock is fairly easy to install and goes over your existing deadbolt. To install, you will need to remove the existing thumb latch on the inside of your door and replace it with the steel mounting plate, which holds the Wyze Lock. Installation takes roughly 15 minutes and it essentially just requires a screwdriver. The Wyze Lock requires a Wi-Fi bridge to work, which comes in the box and can be plugged into a nearby wall outlet. (You can see how easy it is to install via the instruction video below.)

In addition to being affordable, the Wyze Lock doesn’t really skimp out on the features. Once installed, it will automatically unlock the door when you arrive home and then it will automatically lock again when you leave. It can also be programmed to lock anytime you close the door, even if you’re home.

It’s also easy to control from afar. You can share a smart code with your friends via the Wyze app, or you can send them a code that can be entered on the optional Wyze Lock Keypad (sold separately, price unannounced). For strangers that need to gain access to your home, such as contractors, you can share a single-use code that only works during specified hours on a single day. In the Wyze app, you’ll also be able to access a complete activity history of the Wyze Lock, meaning you’ll know anytime the door opens and closes, as well as whenever it locks and unlocks. It isn’t a video smart lock, however, so you won’t get video footage of the action.

Like all of Wyze’s other smart home products, the Wyze also works with Google Assistant and Alexa; if you have a smart speaker, such as a Google Home or Amazon Echo, you’ll be able to integrate the Wyze Lock into your existing smart ecosystem and lock and unlock your door using voice commands.

At just $90, the Wyze Lock is the most affordable smart lock on the market — and potentially a real disrupter. The nearest competitor is the SimpliSafe Smart Lock, which costs about $99, but most of the more popular smart smarts, which have many of the same capabilities as the Wyze Lock, cost between $150 and $300. (Arguably the most popular smart lock, the Nest X Yale Lock, costs $280.)
