We’re not sure where the carnage started. Perhaps it was the electronic pencil sharpener or the overhead projector. All we know is the latest analog school supply victim — the padlock — has fallen victim to Moore’s Law. Master Lock’s dialSpeed Electronic Combination Lock ($25) marks the end of the classic combination padlock as we know it.

But take heart, the lock has some solid features that justify moving to digital. With a backup password stored online, programmable guest passwords, and an intuitive arrow-based user interface (three times clockwise, once counter-clockwise… argh), this lock isn’t just tech for tech’s sake. Throw in the cut-resistant boron carbide shackle and you’ve got a modern but legit padlock. It’s always sad to see a classic ushered out, but this one evolution to the combination lock that makes sense.
