Apple’s MacBooks are among the very best laptops out there, that goes without saying. But over the past few years, they’ve developed an Achilles’ Heel: that terrible keyboard. Starting in 2015, Apple started putting its “Butterfly” keyboard into all its new laptops, a low-profile design engineered for thinness but notoriously unreliable and unpleasant to type on. Now, after Apple has made serveral attempts to improve it, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is claiming the company will revert to a more tried and true design with its next computers.
According to Kuo, a 16-inch MacBook Pro rumored to be slated for release by the end of this year will feature a keyboard with more traditional “scissor” style switches, a mechanism more common to other laptop keyboards and which Apple itself employed before the advent of the butterfly variety. Such a change would be a bit of a retreat, but it would hopefully save users from reliability problems severe enough that Apple had to launch a repair program. And make for a keyboard that’s hopefully a little more pleasant to type on to boot.
