HTCThe annual Mobile World Congress is the ideal place to show off the latest and greatest in cell phone technology, as long as your name isn’t Apple. HTC’s newly revealed super phone, dubbed the One X, is the most exciting handset to emerge from this year’s mobile smörgåsbord so far and is intended to serve as the patriarch of an entire line of one-branded devices.
Brutish specs like a 4.7-inch, Super LCD 2 display that features a 1,280×720 resolution and Gorilla Glass, a 1.5GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of ram, 32GB of internal storage, 25GB of integrated Dropbox cloud storage (for two years), Beats Audio, NFC, a 1.3 megapixel 720p front-facing camera and Android 4.0 ICS, are enough to flare up a geek’s restless leg syndrome. Then there’s the 8MP rear camera boasting a new f/2.0 lens, an improved image sensor and a dedicated imaging chip. The result is a shooter that can startup in less than 0.7 seconds, autofocus in a blistering 0.2 seconds and snap stills while shooting video, or just pull stills from videos after the fact.
Despite the ginormous screen size, a new polycarbonate material and unibody construction also keeps the phone at a manageable 0.36-inch thick. AT&T is the exclusive carrier in the U.S., however, its version only sports 16GB of internal storage and a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, which apparently was swapped out for LTE support.
