Following an incident earlier this month where a MacBook allegedly caught on fire during normal use, Apple has warned that the batteries in certain 15-inch MacBook Pros sold between late 2015 and early 2017 might be a fire risk. Luckily for you (if you have one and it hasn’t caught on fire), Apple is replacing the batteries for free if your laptop is affected.
To find out, you’ll need to turn on your Mac, go to the Apple menu, choose “About This Mac” and check the 15-digit serial number using Apple’s website. If your laptop is affected, you’ll need to take it to the nearest Apple Store or authorized Apple repair shop as soon as you can, and stop using it in the meantime. You can also arrange to mail your laptop for a replacement as well.
Apple says the replacement process may take up to two weeks, and you should back up your data before hand to be safe. Yes, it’s a pain, but it’s better than burning your house down. And at least you get a free battery out of the deal.
