4k resolution is still a long way off from replacing lowly 1080p as the new standard for high-definition, but Sony’s latest BDP-S790 Blu-ray player doesn’t mind standing on the cutting edge. Among the slew of players announced, this lone model packs the ability to up convert 1080p content to 4k resolution — which is great news for the four Japanese ballers out there who have a 4k TV and are in need of a content stop gap until the market catches up. An array of more practical bells and whistles are onboard as well, including 2D to 3D upscaling, Wifi, and access to a diverse array of streaming content services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Sonys’ unlimited video / music streaming services. Over-sharers intent on keeping the world aware of their every move will also appreciate the included Socialize application, which enables users to tweet, like, or post what they’re watching with ease directly from the device. There’s even embedded Skype that allows for video calling from the couch when connected to a TV web cam. Pricing is still unknown, but we’d imagine this flagship device won’t come cheap.
