A day after Apple released two updated iPads, the company is doing pretty much the same thing with its iMac line. Starting today iMac models come stock with an upgraded processor and better graphics.
The 21.5-inch iMacs can now be configured with Intel’s 8th-gen quad-core or six-core processors, which Apple claims will deliver up to 60 percent faster performance. The 27-inch iMac will come stock with a 9th-gen 6-core processor, but you can also opt for an 8-core processor, which Apple claims is capable of delivering performance that’s up to 2.4 times faster than its previous iMacs.
When it comes to graphics, both the 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs can be configured with a Radeon Pro graphics card or a Radeon Pro Vega chipset, found in Apple’s 2017-released iMac Pros. According to Apple, the Radeon Pro Vega chipset provides up to 80 percent faster graphics performance on the 21.5-inch iMac, and up to 50 percent faster graphics performance on the 27-inch iMac.
These updates to the iMac line are aimed at multi-tasking and entertainment (better graphics for watching movies or playing computer games). Aesthetically, the design of these new iMacs hasn’t changed at all. The 21.5-inch and 27-inch Macs still have the same 4K and 5K Retina displays as before. And you still won’t find any kind of FaceID or TouchID on any of the new iMacs.
These new updates have not been applied to the non-Retina display 21.5-inch iMac, which Apple continues to sell for $1,099. If you’re looking for the cheapest iMac, that’s still the one to buy.
The new 21.5-inch iMac will start at $1,299 and the 27-inch iMac with will start at $1,799. Both can be ordered today from Apple’s website.
