AsusThe Eee Pad Transformer Prime is Asus’s second impressive attempt at combining the benefits of a laptop and tablet into one sleek package. On specs alone, the device tramples the current competition and is one of the few Android devices in our opinion that might give the iPad 2 a run for its money.
A brand new Nvidia Tegra 3 processor sits at the top of its goodie bag of geekery, making the Prime the world’s first quad-core tablet. The 1280 x 800, Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display capable of 600 nits of max brightness is also a thing of beauty and sports a hydro-oleophobic coating to combat fingerprints. That same coating is applied to the Prime’s 0.33-inch thick, 1.29 pound body, which is slightly thinner and lighter than Cupertino’s champion. Other onboard highlights include 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of shooting 1080p video, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, a microSD slot, mini-HDMI output, 64 or 32GB of onboard storage, and a battery life. It will ship with Android 3.2, but Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to come to the device “by the end of the year”.
For an extra $150, productivity hounds can pick up the sleek keyboard dock, which also provides 6 extra hours of battery time, plus a USB 2.0 port and full-sized SD slot. Expect both the $499 32GB and $599 64GB models to launch this December.
