Jaybird’s X4 wireless sport in-ear headphones are the next evolution of the company’s X3 wireless sport in-ear headphones, which I ran with for a few weeks last year and actually really liked. Like those previous sport headphones, the new X4s are also wireless neckbuds, meaning there’s a wire tethering both earbuds together. It’s not quite as liberating as truly wireless earbuds, but also means the X4s won’t be as expensive; Jaybird’s current truly wireless earbuds, the Jaybird Run, go for $160, while these new X4s are $130.
As far as improvements, the X4 wireless sport in-ear headphones aren’t just sweat-resistant like the X3s, but they’re fully waterproof – IPX7 rated – so you can dunk them in water and leave them there for 30 minutes. (Just don’t expect to swim with them.) In the company’s press release, Jaybird’s CEO states that these are in-ear headphones optimized for intense, outdoor activities: “from trail runs and mountain bike rides to summit scrambles and deep powder days.” Jaybird tweaked the fit and sound quality of the X4s so they’re all-around better, too.
The X4s still use the same proprietary charger (not micro-USB) as the X3s, and they’ll get eight hours of playing time before you need to juice ’em back up. They also have an omnidirectional mic, so talking calls should be clear, as well. And, like before, you’ll be able to tweak the sound settings via Jaybird’s iOS or Android app.
The Jaybird X4 Wireless Sport Headphones are available for pre-order at jaybirdsport.com today for $130, which is the same price as the now-antiquated X3s. They come in three colors: black metallic/flash, alpha metallic/jade, storm metallic/glacier.
