We can go on and on about how great Apple AirPods ($159) are and how they’re arguably Apple’s best first-generation product ever. (Are they better than the first iPod or the first iPhone? Possibly.) Even though Apple released new AirPods in early 2019, the update wasn’t crazy — just iterative — and the new crop of AirPods are essentially indistinguishable from the ones that were released in 2016. Nevertheless, AirPods will remain the most popular true wireless earbuds by a long shot: they command 75 percent of the global market share.
Still, AirPods aren’t cheap. You can buy a pair for $159 or $200, depending on whether you want a wireless charging case. If you really want AirPods but don’t want to pay that much, there are other options out there. You’ve probably seen them while scrolling through the product purgatory that is amazon.com: AirPods selling for a fraction of their normal price. Only they’re not AirPods at all. They’re knockoffs. Fake AirPods.
Many of these fake AirPods are made by companies you’ve likely never heard of. But because they’re super cheap — some start at just over $10 — you might be tempted to pull the trigger. One thing with these AirPod knockoffs, or so I realized after researching them, is that they disappear from Amazon. Vanish. You can save a product page and then come back to it a day later, sometimes even less, and you’ll be greeted by a “404 error” page. Is it sketchy? Absolutely. Is it cheap? Hell yes. Should you buy them? Here’s what you should know.

AirPods vs Knockoff AirPods: The Big Differences
• Size. Each knockoff AirPod is roughly twice the size of an AirPod. In other words, nobody is going mistake these knockoffs for real AirPods. In fact, you might even get some more awkward gazes; people looking at you and thinking, “That doesn’t look right.”
• Lights. Most knockoff AirPods actually have lights built into them. These lights will flicker blue and red every few seconds when you’re wearing them. It’s not super noticeable in the daylight, but people will know something is up when they see your AirPods light up at night. Regular AirPods don’t do that.
