This week, Sony announced its first super-telephoto prime lens for E-Mount — the FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens — and it boasts some pretty mouthwatering optics and specs for wildlife and sports photographers. It has a super fast (and quiet) AF system that’s 5x faster than its competitors’ super-telephoto prime lens, according to Sony, and it supports A9’s 20fps burst shooting and continuous shooting with moving-subject tracking.
The FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS is also far-and-away the lightest 400mm f/2.8 prime lens out there, coming in at just over six pounds. This was accomplished by everything in the lens being built in-house by Sony. It has a custom, 11-blade circular aperture diaphragm to achieve a great background bokeh effect even from far away. And the lens is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.
If you want to see the insane levels of details the FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS, paired with Sony’s A9, is able to capture, you can check out Sony’s sample gallery (here).
The FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens is available for pre-order for just under $12,000. It’s expected to ship this September.
