At the the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced its most powerful computer ever, the iMac Pro. The company is promising “workstation-class performance” inside of a standard 27-inch iMac body.
The iMac Pro is as much about processing power as it is about beauty. It has an 8-Core Xeon processor (upgradeable to 18 cores), a 5K display and an AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPU card — according to Apple, it produces “the most advanced graphics ever in a Mac.” The iMac Pro will have an 80 percent greater cooling capacity thanks to its redesigned dual-fan technology.
The iMac Pro will support up to 16GB of VRAM and up to 4TB of SSD storage (3 GB/sec transfer speeds). The machine will ship with a 10GB-speed ethernet port and supports up to 128GB of ECC memory (twice that of the old iMac). It will have four Thunderbolt 3.0 ports. The computer will be available in one color: Space Grey. According to Apple, the iMac Pro’s baseline specifications would normally run a consumer $7,000. The iMac Pro will start at $5,000.
It’s worth noting that despite this being Apple’s most powerful computer ever, it’s still not meant to replace the Mac Pro. Apple is apparently still working on a modular computer.
The iMac Pro will be available in December.
