If all the extra time at home this year has left you wishing you had an extra laptop around the house, Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Go is aimed squarely at you. With up to 8GB of RAM and a respectable-if-not-top-tier 10th generation Intel core i5 processor in a package that starts at $550, the Surface Go splits the difference between something like a Chromebook, and laptops that cost twice as much.

The major catch about the Surface Laptop Go is its operating system — it runs Windows 10 Home, a version of the Microsoft operating system that can only run apps from the official Windows app store, unless you pay $99 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. If you’re on the fence, at least the option’s always there. But it will add $100 to the Go’s baseline price if you’re counting on having full Windows 10.
Still, the Surface Laptop Pro seems like a great pick for newly homebound students, or anyone else who could suddenly very much use a new laptop of their own. It’s available now.
