Remember 1997? Seinfeld was still on, Titanic was a number 1 box office hit, and Now That’s What I Call Music was yet to drop its first collection. You can’t go back to those halcyon days but you can get a slice of them in your browser thanks to developer Felix Rieseberg who has packaged 1997’s Mac OS 8 operating system into a free, standalone app you can run on your modern-day Mac, Linux, or Windows 10 machine.
Downloadable from GitHub (just scroll down until you see the Downloads section), the Javascript app emulates a 1991 Macintosh Quadra 900 and comes with some classic software including Oregon Trail, Duke Nukem 3D, Civilization II. No, it can’t connect to the internet — isn’t that great?!
