The Beatles may have been recently re-released, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in on your own vintage cassette-based recording, multi-touch style. Reinventing the Tascam Porta One, the Portastudio for iPad ($10) app allows you to mix four tracks to a virtual cassette in a similar fashion to the classic 4-track recorder. Designed to mimic the interface of the Porta One there are level controls for each track, pan, EQ controls and an analog VU meter. You can even use the iPad USB audio interface to capture audio from a variety of external devices. Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, the app will mix down to a stereo audio file and share with iTunes or SoundCloud (coming soon). Just don’t go expecting any record deals from EMI.
