Most wireless earbuds aren’t wireless. Popular options like Bose SoundSport, NuForce BE6i, and the new Freedom buds by Jaybird are all still tethered together — so a wire (and usually a neckband) still exists. But wire-free earbuds aren’t exactly a novel idea either; see the recently released Bragi Dash, Motorola’s VerveOnes+ and Samsung’s new Gear IconX. Now, the Danish audio giant Jabra is getting in on the action.
Earlier this month Jabra announced two special-edition wireless sport headphones, the Jabra Sport Pulse ($120) and Jabra Sport Coach ($160). Today they are announcing their new wire-free Jabra Elite Sport earbuds ($250). The workout-specific earbuds are both sweat- and waterproof (IP67 rated). They have a 3-hour battery life and come with a portable charging case, like most other wire-free headphones, that can provide an additional six hours.
Jabra is calling them “the most technically advanced truly wireless earbuds” ever, because of their in-call experience. When on a call, the audio will automatically switch, after analyzing ambient noise, to the earbud with least background noise. In this way, you can listen to one earbud at a time, or both in tandem. (Also, if you loose one, you’re not completely hosed.) The Elite Sport shares many of the key features found in the Pulse Special Edition, like heart-rate and continuous VO2 Max fitness testing, and even has the Coach Special Edition’s TrackFit motion sensor, which automatically counts your reps.
The Elite Sport earbuds are compatible with both Android and iOS devices, and will come with a three-year warranty. They are expected to cost $250 and will be exclusively available at Best Buy stores on October 30. You can pre-order them on BestBuy.com come late September.
