Unimatic is still pretty new to the game by watch brand standards. Even so, the Italian outfit has gotten off to a rollicking start. That’s been helped by the brand’s focus on rock-solid tool watches, its watches’ unmistakable minimalist styling and a consistent release schedule.

Speaking of consistent releases, Unimatic’s latest drop is a fresh, gorgeous take on its affordable titanium field watch. But the Unimatic Modello Due U2S-T-W has more than just good looks. The outdoor-inspired timepiece also incorporates a pretty novel material.

On the hunt

The first thing you’ll likely notice about this take on the Modello Due is the khaki colorway. The connection between field watches and this globetrotting adventurer-favored palette is probably pretty obvious. But there’s an even deeper connection than you might think.

The minimalist dial, which features Super-LumiNova GL light old radium lume on its hand and indices, sports a “Verde Safari” colorway entirely new to the brand.

That dial configuration was picked to match the watch’s box-stitched, two-piece leather strap. But here’s the real kicker: that strap isn’t made from cowhide. It’s made from elk.

It’s a thoughtful material choice that speaks to the brand’s dedication to its craft. It would have been just as easy to go with a more traditional leather in the same color, but Unimatic wanted that outdoor inspiration to really shine through. I’d say they accomplished exactly that.

Touring the tool watch

The new colorway and novel material would be all for naught if the rest of the watch didn’t hold up to scrutiny. Luckily, it very much does.

While the watch’s Swiss Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement — often called an ETA 2824 clone — isn’t novel, it’s sturdy, reliable and (most importantly) part of what makes this watch affordable.

That movement is protected inside the timepiece’s 38mm sandblasted titanium case. It’s an upgrade of the Modello Due’s standard 316L steel case, making it both 45 percent lighter and extremely tough.

Again, this isn’t entirely new to Unimatic — another version of this watch has seen a titanium case — but it fits extremely well with this configuration and helps the U2S-T-W stand out among its peers.

Pricing and availability

The Unimatic Modello Due U2S-T-W is now available on the brand’s site for €1,200 (roughly $1,261). However, it’s limited to just 150 examples and will likely sell out quickly, seeing how strikingly beautiful and relatively affordable it is.
