Swatch’s Take on an Iconic Diver Gets a Military-Inspired Redux — and It Might Be the Best Yet

This affordable, Swiss-made automatic bears many of the same hallmarks as its siblings, but has some of the sharpest looks of the bunch.

Since the first launch in September of 2023, Swatch and Blancpain have been churning out new takes on their collaborative diver. While eight have launched so far, including an excessively vibrant one most recently, the upcoming ninth may be the one that takes the cake.

Called the Swatch x Blancpain Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Green Abyss, this dive watch’s striking appearance is influenced by military history.

Though more typically associated with field watches, the OD green colorway works remarkably well on this diver.

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines

As has been the case with its predecessors, this take on the Swatch x Blancpain Fifty Fathoms dive watch differs from its siblings largely courtesy of its colorway. While many of the others are quite vibrant — done up in colors you’d expect from an ocean-inspired collection — this one is a bit darker.

This colorway is very popular among certain types of gear […] and also has ties to military history.

While the brands call this color “Green Abyss,” it’s actually OD Green (or olive drab green). This colorway is very popular among certain types of gear — namely, everyday carry (like pocket knives), outdoor packs, footwear, and even apparel — and also has ties to military history.

Per Doc Jargon, the U.S. Army’s columnist ala “Dear Abby,” OD green “was the color of the utility uniform of all branches of service from 1952 until 1989.” However, the official name of the color is actually “OG” (“Olive Green”).

While no longer the standard official color for all utility uniforms, it’s still used for some uniforms and accessories today. It’s hard to imagine that, in crafting this watch, Swatch and Blancpain were unaware of its connection to military history. The likelier explanation is that it was a very purpose-driven decision.

Furthermore, the dial markers, hands, dive timer bezel and even the strap have another distinguished, military-related colorway: field tan. Again, this is probably no accident, even considering how well these colors contrast with one another.

Military precision

It bears mentioning that, while no different from its siblings, this diver still has all the other hallmark features of the Blancpain x Swatch collaboration. Of course, that includes the signature Bioceramic case and dive timer bezel — the same material used in the Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch collab.

Like the other Scuba Fifty Fathoms watches in this collection, this one also has an artsy take on an exhibition caseback, complete with its own nudibranch that creeps around the caseback as the watch ticks away. Below that is Swatch’s SISTEM51 automatic movement with its 90-hour power reserve.

The finishing touch is a two-piece NATO-style strap made from recycled fishing nets, with a Bioceramic pin buckle and loops.
