New York designer Todd Snyder is no stranger to Red Wing boots. He wore the 877 style as a young man in the Midwest when he worked on a road crew surveying for his dad’s engineering firm, Snyder and Associates. Later in his career as a designer, he collaborated with the brand when he was the senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew, introducing the heritage brand to a much wider audience. Now, Snyder’s eponymous brand is releasing a collaboration with Red Wing, a new silhouette based on the 877 style that is a first for the historic Minnesota bootmaker.
“I always want something that’s just a little different that you can’t find anywhere else,” Snyder said. “This was a great opportunity for me to do something unique.” The Red Wing x Todd Snyder Moc Toe Boot is a variation on the classic 877 moc-toe boot and features a shorter 6-inch shaft more suited for daily wear in the city. “I used to wear the taller ones and they’re great for when you’re working in the field or working in the mud — it made sense to have them in a work environment,” Snyder said. “But when I was thinking of this, I was like, ‘Gosh, it would be really neat to have a pair that is a little bit lower.’ And [Red Wing] allowed me to do it, which was really awesome.”
Along with the shorter height, the Goodyear-welted boot has a combination leather-suede upper available in two colorways: charcoal with olive suede and copper. The charcoal colorway also features a black Vibram wedge sole which is not offered on other Red Wing boots. Both colorways come with leather laces and are available in half sizes from 8 to 12. Even if you already have Red Wing boots, this collaboration is distinctive enough to warrant further investigation — it has all the quality of the brand’s iconic work boots in a style perfect for the city.
