Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

Designed for both men and women, Manitobah’s ‘Tipi’ Moccasins are purpose-built for any and every cozy fire, cabin and retreat. But if you’ve never owned a pair, you may wonder where you should be wearing moccasins or perhaps whether there’s a difference between indoor and outdoor moccasins. Further yet, what retailers are crafting authentic moccasins?

If you’re a newcomer to these soft leather shoes, consider Manitobah. In 1990, the company began as a trading post for Indigenous artisans before evolving into a full-on e-commerce platform. Today, Manitobah remains connected to its roots, aiming to provide authentic, Indigenous-designed products that return value to Indigenous communities: shopping the brand means supporting individual artists or entire communities and youth groups.

Meanwhile, slipping on a pair of soft suede, fur-trimmed moccasin slippers will transport you to a better, cozier world of true R&R.

The Backstory

Manitobah: A Brand Built For and Around Indigenous Creators

In high school, Manitobah’s founder Sean McCormick started selling fur and leather in northern Manitoba. In 1990, he assembled a trading post where other Inidgenous artisans could trade handmade mukluks, moccasins, tanned leather, skins and furs. In 1996, McCormick completed the Manitoba Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Training Program, crafted his business plan and started the company that became Manitobah.

Today, Manitobah gives back in several major ways. Especially notable is its Indigenous Market, where customers can shop authentic Indigenous art, apparel and wares – and 100 percent of proceeds from every sale goes directly to the artists. Along the way, artists also receive hands-on mentoring, marketing and B2B networking.

In 2013, the company also founded the Manitobah Mukluk Storyboot School. In an effort to preserve and prolong time-honored crafts, the program helps bring Indigenous artists together with students across Canada. The program’s courses are completely free for Indigenous youth, and help pass traditional teachings down to the next generation.

However, more than anything, Manitobah wants to help Indigenous communities develop economic independence. By prioritizing Indigenous suppliers, employment and equity ownership, the company has preserved a mainline to traditional products while empowering its people.

What Should I Look for in the Best Men’s Moccasin Slippers?

When shopping for men’s moccasins, it’s important to look for a balance of comfort and durability. Avoid brands that rely on synthetic materials, as ongoing wear can exacerbate any discomfort and expedite damage. Where possible, opt for a brand with authentic ties to an Indigenous community.

While Manitobah’s unisex Tipi Moccasins offer sizing available for both men and women, they’re a standout when it comes to men’s moccasins. Women’s moccasins typically boast better comfort and detailing than men’s styles. Manitobah’s commitment to natural, beautiful materials ensures every pair is crafted with equally comfortable fur, leather or deerskin, regardless of the wearer.

The brand explains its Tipis boast all the “practicality of a traditional indoor moccasin” alongside the cabin-ready charm of a fur-lined slipper. Made with soft, breathable suede, the slip-on moccasins also boast a fleece footbed and soft suede sole to offer “barefoot-style comfort.”

Our POV

Manitobah Makes Excellent Slippers, Indoor and Outdoor Fur-Lined Moccasins

Available in six colorways, the Tipi moccasins are a great winter go-to. Stash them at the foot of your bed or cabin entryway and slip them on like a sigh of relief.

Tipis are an excellent entry-level, indoor moccasin slipper. They’re a great starting point, but once you’re ready to level up – consider Manitobah’s greater offerings. With a long list of outdoor moccasins, hand-beaded styles and rare, one-off moccasin slippers you’re spoiled for choice. Made with traditional (sustainably sourced) materials like moosehide, beaver fur, cowhide suede, rabbit fur and more, each pair is worth collecting. The brand even offers kids’ moccasins so you can find styles for your whole family – while supporting another.

Bring home a pair of Tipi Moccasins today to see what Manitobah is all about – you and your feet won’t be disappointed.
