When you think of Sperry, moccasin-style boat shoes are likely the first thing that comes to mind. But the iconic brand produced a series of deck sneakers that were issued to U.S. Navy troops during World War II. French brand Wakouwa has reinterpreted these O.G. sneakers — right down to the color-way.
Founded by Pierre Fournier in 2012, Wakouwa exists for the sole reason to produce these deck shoes. The brand’s singular focus (Fournier also runs workwear company Anatomica) guarantees a superb product. For one, the shoe’s body is made from sturdy American canvas, and the vulcanized rubber soles will give you the traction you need should you wear these deck sneakers as intended — on a boat. The kicker is that the sneaker is based off of a last from Alden that Fournier painstakingly tweaked over several years to mimic the contours and comfort of the original U.S. Navy deck sneaker.
