Outerknown Just Dropped a Compelling Alternative to Patagonia’s Most Iconic Layer

This shirt/fleece hybrid is a unique new mid-layer option that kinda sits in an outerwear class by itself.

We’ve long considered Outerknown’s Blanket Shirt the best overshirt for most people. It’s comfortable, made without synthetic chemicals, wrinkle-resistant, fuller-fitting, and always available in a wide array of color options.

The garment’s been so successful for Outerknown that it’s also sparked a growing blanket line, which today includes the Chroma version (for men and women), the original, and now a new fleece-like version that echoes the iconic look of Patagonia’s Snap-T series.

Part Fleece, Part Shirt. So Flirts?Shleeces?

The design brief here feels pretty straightforward. What if the blanket shirt’s soft and cozy organic cotton was used to make a classic snap-button layer?

The final result is an interesting mid-layer that feels almost like a new shacket subgenre I’m going to go ahead and call Flirts Sleeces™, which, like a lot of Outerknown’s stuff, seems ideal for fighting off mild chills at the front and back end of balmy summer days.

The Blanket Snap Popover strangely lacks a chest pocket, but its two hand pockets are nicely integrated into the seams of the garment.

Given its strong resemblance to the Snap-T, we’re a little surprised that the Blanket Snap Popover doesn’t feature a chest pocket (and thus, no secret hidden feature either.)

It feels especially weird since the blanket shirt the Snap Popover is based on sports two of them. But the garment isn’t entirely pocketless thanks to two side entry hand pockets placed thoughtfully on the side seams.

Two Different Colors Offer Wildly Different Looks

Outerknown

The Blanket Snap Popover comes in two colors, each with pretty different vibes. I’m partial to the monotone, and yes, admittedly more boring, Pitch Black option. It looks like the low-key garment I’d enjoy wearing on the deck of my imaginary Hamptons beach estate before boarding a chopper back to the office.

The French Blue Mojave Stripe version of the Outerknown Blanket Snap looks much more casual (and beachy) compared to its Pitch Black colored counterpart.

The other option, French Blue Mojave Stripe, looks much more like (what I’d imagine) Outerknown founder Kelly Slater would wear around after a surf or perhaps while putzing around in the backyard of his own Hawaiian mansion.

Both are available now for purchase on Outerknown’s website.

P.S. You’re not alone if you think the man modeling the pitch-black jacket is a dead ringer for Gary Busey in his Point Break days. But it’s actually none other than Jeff Daniels Dan Mann.
