I’ve written about a lot of Nike shoes this year, and from all directions.

Highlights include the reissued LD-1000, a somewhat controversial release when it first came out in the 1970s, and the performance-oriented Pegasus Plus (itself a reissue in everything but name).

But, from where I’m standing, one model stands taller than the rest — and no, not that isn’t a coy reference to Nike’s next max-cushioned trainer, the Vomero 18, which boasts a towering 46mm stack height.

Nope, my number-one Nike shoe of 2024 was a sneaker called the C1ty, and it’s not for setting world records, personal bests or, frankly, doing any sort of exercise.

The C1ty is a lifestyle shoe. It costs $100. And it just got a new dark-blue colorway, called “Coveralls,” that might be my favorite one of all.

What makes the C1ty so good?

Within Nike’s greater sneaker ecosystem, the C1ty is remarkable for a couple reasons, chief among them its price and general approachability.

You see, the affordable shoe is readily available and has been since its release in October — no online queue, no bots, no separate app. You don’t even have to buy it directly from Nike, as places like Foot Locker have started to stock the C1ty, too.

When limited editions, one-off collabs and random exclusives rule the roost, it’s refreshing to see a shoe that’s just … there.

What’s more, the C1ty is a brand-new model, as opposed to the countless revivals and homages coming out of Beaverton, several of which I’ve already mentioned.

Don’t get me wrong, I love an unexpected reissue — and I’m dying for the brand to bring back the Flyknit Trainer from 2012. In earnest this time. But I also like to see companies stick their necks out from time to time, and Nike is at its best when it does so.

Sole searching

Here, I should probably mention that the C1ty isn’t entirely original. Then again, what product isn’t at least a little iterative?

As I wrote at the time of its release, the design of the sneaker ties together elements from Tom Sachs’s General Purpose Shoe and the famous Field General from the 1980s, including a microfiber ankle collar and molded cup sole.

But the result is less of a reissue and more of a first edition that arrives feeling both familiar and fresh.

And now, seeing the blue colorway, it looks like I’ll be adding yet another pair to my collection.
