Like our universe, the list of direct-to-consumer brands selling luggage is seemingly ever-expanding and accelerating.

Yet, Canada-based Monos will always garner respect among those who closely follow the luggage industry as one of the first brands to popularize so-called “hybrid luggage.”

The concept was simple.

Every type of hard-sided luggage has strengths and weaknesses. Polycarbonate is cheap, lightweight, and resists denting, albeit at the expense of rigidity. Aluminum luggage offers the ultimate protection and looks incredible, but it also tends to show wear quickly, weighs more than plastic, and offers zero give, limiting how much travelers can stuff inside.

Monos initially helped make a name for itself in the luggage world by offering a hybrid suitcase – which blended polycarbonate panels with an aluminum frame and corner guards. The bag looked like a traditional aluminum suitcase, at least from far away, while weighing and costing much less.

But what if there was a hard-sided suitcase that combined the best elements of both styles? Monos’ hybrid suitcase leaned on this clever idea by color-matching a hard polycarbonate shell to a zipperless aluminum frame and anodized aluminum corner guards. The result was a suitcase that looked like a traditional aluminum suitcase while costing much less.

That’s why we decided to call it the best affordable “aluminum” luggage option in our aluminum luggage buying guide, while also cheekily acknowledging its imposter status.

However, the company’s brand-new line of aluminum luggage finally offers everything you’d expect from an actual aluminum hard-sided suitcase at prices less than half of those of competing luxury options.

And while we’ve yet to test it, the new line could finally wind up earning the title of best affordable aluminum suitcase outright on a fair and square basis.

A True Aluminum Luggage Line

Monos’ new aluminum luggage line is clearly designed to compete with aluminum offerings from Away, Rimowa, Sterling Pacific, and more.

As you’d imagine, Monos’ new aluminum collection is primarily made from aluminum.

That means the suitcases have the unmistakable shiny exterior many travelers love – as well as the inevitable “patina” that’ll come with continued exposure to airline baggage handlers.

Beyond those two points, the most significant tradeoff of the bag’s brushed anodized aluminum shell is weight.

For comparison’s sake, the new Aluminum Carry-On Plus weighs 11.1 lbs. The hybrid version of the same bag weighs almost two pounds less at 9.25 lbs. The all-plastic version of the same suitcase is even lighter at just 7.38 lbs.

The new aluminum version of Monos’ popular carry-on plus bag has one clear downside beyond its price tag – it weighs nearly four pounds more than the version made entirely out of polycarbonate.

Interestingly enough, though, the aluminum version appears to also offer the largest volume of the three staircases, at 36.4L, which is slightly above the hybrid version’s 36L.

Like most aluminum luggage brands—outside of Sterling Pacific’s uber-lux offerings —plastic is still used in many key areas like the handles and wheel wells.

Three Striking Color Options

The aluminum collection includes popular black and silver colored options to match the rest of the aluminum luggage market, but a third color option dubbed Champagne Gold is the most distinctive choice for those who want to stand out.

While the traditional brush aluminum look dubbed “Aspen Silver” will likely appeal most to purists, Monos’ aluminum collection also includes a more contemporary black aluminum color called Caviar Black, as well as a unique Champagne Gold option.

Sizes for Any Trip, Plus the Trunk

Monos isn’t tip-toeing into the aluminum luggage race with a single off-one release. The new collection includes the smaller Carry-On Plus, the Check-In Medium, and the Check-In Large.

Existing Monos fans will also appreciate that the brand’s also introducing an aluminum version of its popular trunk, which has quickly become one of the company’s signature pieces thanks to its deeper, taller shape, which makes it easier to pack larger, bulkier items like boots.

Pricing and Availability

The smallest Aluminum Carry-On Plus suitcase is the cheapest in the new line at $665. From the lens of Monos’ other suitcases, that might not feel cheap. After all, the baseline polycarbonate version of the suitcase sells for more than 50% less at $325.

But that’s quite competitive compared to the rest of the aluminum suitcase market. Away’s comparably sized bigger aluminum carry-on does cost $20 less than Monos’ option, but it also technically offers a slightly smaller storage capacity.

Similar aluminum check-in bags from luxury brands like Rimowa and Sterling Pacific cost over twice as much.

Monos’ prices also don’t escalate dramatically as you go up in size in the aluminum luggage line. The trunk is the most expensive option, and it costs just $110 more than the baseline carry-on.

The entire aluminum collection is now available online and at Monos’ Canadian boutiques.
