Fashion can be fleeting but a good fragrance stands the test of time. Few know it better than the legendary perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud, whose expansive oeuvre includes the iconic fragrances Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani and Bvlgari’s Pour Homme.

Pharrell Williams will hope Cavallier-Belletrud’s latest fragrance has similar staying power. Along with his daughter, Camille, Cavallier-Belletrud oversaw the creation of the first Louis Vuitton fragrance since Williams took up the mantle as the creative director of menswear at the French fashion label.

Louis Vuitton LV Lovers

A unisex fragrance, LV Lovers is a woody aromatic eau de parfum with notes of bergamot, ginger and sandalwood.

According to the brand, Williams and Cavallier-Belletrud attacked the scent with the idea to capture photosynthesis, or “a spray of sunlight,” in a bottle.

“The warm earthiness of tree trunks expanding under the forest sun.”

“It may sound abstract, but if you look at life, photosynthesis is the starting point for everything,” Cavallier-Belletrud says.

One of the lead ingredients in LV Lovers is the resin of the Ferula plant, otherwise known as galbanum.

Though seldom used in modern fragrances, galbanum carries potent green notes and was used here to give off the smell of “the warm earthiness of tree trunks expanding under the forest sun,” the brand says.

Pricing and availability

Announced in early June, LV Lovers is now available to purchase in 100mL bottles for $320. It only comes in an eau de parfum — the stronger siblings to eau de toilettes and eau de colognes.

The fragrance arrives on the heels of this year’s Fragrance Foundation Awards Ceremony, where Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Perfumer award.
