J.Crew and Barbour may hail from opposite sides of the Atlantic, however, the two brands share an overlapping heritage in preppy fashion and agrarian workwear. In other words, you’re just as likely to find their jackets in New England horse stables as on the streets of New York City.

Now, the two brands have teamed up for the ultimate mashup: a barn coat, complete with distinctive overlapping pockets but finished in Barbour’s signature olive-green waxed canvas. What’s more, the jacket stands out among Barbour’s collection as rare and distinctive from anything else it makes.

That said, it’s not the first time the two trad outerwear purveyors have teamed up.

Second time’s the charm

The J.Crew x Barbour Barn Jacket was first released in 2019. It was a limited-edition version of J.Crew’s design made entirely by Barbour.

In 2017, J.Crew took advantage of the hype around its long-discontinued Barn Jacket selling on the vintage market by reproducing it exactly to the original specs. This re-release was so popular that it created the perfect opportunity to collaborate with the most logical partner to max out the design.

Barbour’s materials and manufacturing exceeded those used for J.Crew’s barn coat, but the design didn’t need to change at all. By Barbour using its resources to produce J.Crew’s jacket, both parties were playing to their respective strengths.

Two of the most popular barn coats-turned-popular fashion came together to produce the perfect example of the form. The overlapping pockets, large collar, and adjustable cuff blended perfectly with an olive waxed canvas fabric and golden-brown corduroy cuffs and collar.

Barbour’s tartan lining, solid brass hardware and hand warmer pockets put the brand’s unmistakable touch on the jacket. It is the brilliantly simple idea of a J.Crew Barn Jacket produced by Barbour executed to perfection.

A shared history

J.Crew was founded in 1983 as a mail-order catalog. It originally specialized in clothing and accessories inspired by an idealized classic New England lifestyle. Along with staples like polo shirts and chino pants, it sold functional workwear like jackets and boots.

One of the New York brand’s most popular items from its early years was a barn coat fittingly called the Barn Jacket. Everyone from equestrians to city dwellers adored this rugged and functional jacket. But it eventually went out of production in the early 2000s.

Barbour started making waxed cotton cloth in 1894 and soon after started selling waxed canvas apparel for fishermen and farmers. One of the company’s first jackets, which lives on in models like the Ashby, Bedale and Beaufort, became a favorite among English farmers.

The British Royal Family, most notably Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, popularized Barbour jackets among British elite society in the 1980s. By the mid-1990s, the brand has transitioned from nautical and agricultural workwear to popular fashion.

Availability and pricing

The J.Crew x Barbour Barn Jacket is back with a limited run, available exclusively at J.Crew. It sells for $425 on J.Crew’s website and at stores nationwide. At the time of writing, popular sizes are already starting to run low.

(Pro tip: J.Crew keeps two separate inventories for online and retail. If an item or size is sold out online, you can call your local store and ask them to track one down within the retail inventory system. If it is at a store anywhere in the country, you can buy it over the phone and get it shipped to you.)
