I’ve Waited Years for J.Crew to Bring Back Its Best Chinos

Is it too much to ask for all-cotton chinos in a straight-leg cut? Not anymore.

My most comfortable pair of pants are 20-year-old J.Crew chinos. After what must be thousands of washes by now, they’re soft, relaxed and lived-in. I really mean that.

I wore those pants practically every day through high school, college and much of my twenties. Then, a few years back, I made the sad but safe call to retire them to weekend duty, afraid they might disintegrate on me if I kept up the pace.

They’re just too special … and not for strictly sentimental reasons.

Going for broke

You see, those chinos were made with J.Crew’s so-called “Broken-in” cotton twill and fashioned into a straight-leg that shoots right down the middle. I don’t know the exact weight of the fabric but they feel thick without being heavy. A tag inside confirms the cut: 770.

To be clear, J.Crew still sells 770 chinos and I’ve bought a few newer pairs in recent years, tempted by holiday markdowns and a wide range of colors. I’ve also dabbled in pants from half a dozen other brands.

Nothing quite hits like that old pair J.Crews, least of all the new 770s. Made with part elastane, they lose their shape in-between washes, so they mostly just sit in my closet collecting dust.

What’s old is new again

Well, Christmas came early this year because J.Crew just brought back a straight-cut chino in a “Broken-in” twill fabric and they have all the makings of an everyday classic worthy of uniform status.

With a 16-inch leg opening, they sit somewhere between the new 770 and Classic chinos. The latter came out a few years ago and are slightly more wearable than the obnoxiously loose Giant cut (sorry, I’ve never bought into the hype), however, they’re still a bit boxy for my taste.

The new chinos are also made with an 8.5-ounce, 100-percent cotton twill that’s prewashed for instant comfort but only destined to get better over time. I’m in.

The only perceivable downside? They’re limited to just three colors at launch — Dusty Khaki, navy blue and black — with J.Crew withholding my favorite hue, Stone beige, for what I really hope is a future release.

Until then, I’ll still wear that old pair on Saturdays and Sundays around the house. These look ready to fill in the rest of the time.
